Winter can be harsh on your skin and overall well-being, making self-care more important than ever. Instead of reaching for store-bought products, why not try making your own with simple, natural elements?
These easy DIY recipes nourish your skin, refresh your senses, and help you unwind—all while using ingredients you likely already have at home. Embrace the cozy season with these soothing, all-natural self-care solutions!
1. Flaxseed serum
We love it because this humble seed, more known for its nutritional benefits, can be turned into a luxurious serum. Perfect for moisturizing dry winter skin, it locks in hydration and provides a soothing, natural alternative to commercial serums.

What you need:
- 2 tablespoons of flaxseeds
- 1 cup of water
- A small saucepan
- A cloth strainer bag or fabric (cheesecloths or nut milk bags work great)
- A small jar, bottle, or dispenser for storage/usage
How to do it:
- Combine flax seeds and water in a small saucepan.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer while stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens into a gel-like consistency (about 5-7 minutes).
- Strain the gel using the cloth strainer bag while it’s still warm, but not too hot to touch (it helps to really squeeze out the gel manually).
- Allow gel to cool, then transfer to a small jar, bottle or dispenser.
- Apply a small amount of the serum to your cleansed skin or hair. Leave on for 20-45 minutes and gently wash off with warm water, continuing with your regular skin or hair care routine.
How to store it
Keep in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Discard immediately in case of cloudiness or bad smell.
2. Orange peel toner
We love it because with citrus in season, this is a fun and fresh way to turn leftover peels into a brightening toner. The natural vitamin C helps refresh the skin, tighten pores, and give your complexion a radiant glow.

What you need:
- Peels from 1-2 oranges
- 1 cup of boiling water (make sure that peels are fully immersed in water)
- A small saucepan
- A fine-mesh strainer
- A spray bottle or toner bottle
How to do it:
- Place the orange peels in a small saucepan and simmer for about 5 minutes.
- Let the mixture cool to room temperature.
- Strain out the peels and transfer the liquid to a spray or toner bottle.
- Use this toner after cleansing your face to refresh and brighten your skin. Continue with your regular skincare routine.
How to store it
Keep it in the fridge for a longer shelf life. It should last up to 2 weeks in the fridge but discard immediately if you see changes in texture or notice an off smell.
3. Lemon facial steam
We’re big fans of drinking warm water with fresh lemon juice first thing in the morning. We love this DIY facial steam because it’s one great way to make extra use of those leftover lemon halves rather than tossing them straight in the organic bin.
The steam opens up your pores, hydrates your skin, and provides a refreshing, citrus-infused experience.

What you need:
- Lemon halves
- A large bowl
- A towel (we like to use ours at AVMM)
- Optional additions: fresh or dried herbs
How to do it:
- Fill a large bowl with hot water and add the lemon slices and herbs.
- Place your face over the bowl, covering your head with a towel to trap the steam.
- Relax and steam your face for 5-10 minutes.
*Pro Tip - We collect all our lemon halves in a designated container we keep in the freezer or fridge so that they stay fresh and are ready to use whenever!
